Volvo S60 Sedan No More [Discontinued]: Production Ends In US

Volvo pulls the plugs on the S60 sedan after a run of 24 years in the US market; Production at the brand’s South Carolina-based manufacturing facility to end in June 2024.

The Volvo S60 has been a slow performer for the company and failed to set the sales chart on fire, unlike its sporty German rivals like the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. After selling for around 24 years in the market competing with the Germans, the S60 has run out of luck, and we won’t see brand new S60 rolling on the roads from now on. Volvo S60 Discontinued in the US: Why?

Volvo has delisted the S60 sedan from its US website, thereby confirming this development. Per the brand’s spokesperson, the decision reflects Volvo’s priority and commitment towards electrification. The freed-up production capacity after the retirement of the S60 will be utilized for the production of the recently launched all-electric EX90 three-row SUV which has managed to garner a lot of public attention. So, can we say that an electric car killed an ICE sedan? probably not as the S60 was not a very good performer and the brand’s future plans for EV expansion demanded this move.

Volvo S60 Discontinued in the US: More About It

The third-generation of the S60 sedan was launched in the year 2019 and it was the first sedan in the brand’s line-up to be locally manufactured in the United States. Talking about the sales figures, the sedan managed to sell only around 10,000 to 12,000 units annually over the past 3 years and it was one of the biggest deciding factors as its German counterparts were easily doing around 30,000 units annually.
