Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) today announced the 15 lakh production milestone in the Indian market from its Chakan manufacturing plant. These Made-in-India vehicles also include the India 2.0 program models such as Kushaq, Slavia, Virtus and Taigun. As per the information by the company, over 3 lakh of the total 1.5 million locally produced vehicles are the India 2.0 program cars based on the MQB-A0-IN platform. It is also important to note that over 30% of these locally produced models have also been exported abroad for sale in the international markets.
The local production of Volkswagen Group cars in India started in the year 2007 with the Fabia being the first locally produced model. Since then, nameplates like Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, Polo and Ameo which are now discontinued have rolled out of the Chakan-based manufacturing facility.
Currently, this plant is being utilized for the manufacturing of the India 2.0 program cars including Skoda Slavia and Kushaq as well as Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus. The upcoming Skoda compact SUV will also be manufactured in this plant. The German carmaker also revealed that about 30% of the total manufactured units are exported to overseas markets. Talking about the numbers, around 40 countries are served by the India-based manufacturing facility.
On the powertrain manufacturing front, the local assembly of engines in India started in the year 2015 with the 1.5 litre TDI diesel engine employed in the Polo. Over 3.80 lakh engines have been produced at this facility till now. The 2.0-litre TDI diesel, 1.0-litre petrol and 1.2-litre MPI petrol were also made in this plant. Currently, only the 1.0-litre TSI unit is locally manufactured here and the 1.5-litre TSI EVO as well as the 2.0-litre TSI are imported in the Indian market.
