The new 350cc will help Triumph to price its 400cc offering more aggressively, thanks to the reduction in taxes for motorcycles below 350cc.
Triumph India currently has five offerings in the 400cc segment: Speed 400, Speed T4, Scramble 400 X, Scrambler 400 XC and the latest Thruxton 400. With the new GST norms coming into effect in September 2025, these motorcycles fell into the segment above 350cc, which was subject to a 40% tax slab, as opposed to the 18% GST for motorcycles below 350cc.
While the company initially absorbed the price hike around the festive season, which benefited them with good sales numbers, eventually a call to downsize the engine was taken, most probably to adjust as per the changing market dynamics. For reference, the current lot of 400cc Triumph motorcycles utilises a TR Series 398.15cc single cylinder liquid cooled engine, putting out 39.5 bhp and 37.5 Nm of peak torque.
The new 350cc engine will likely get a reduced bore, which is essentially the inside diameter of the cylinder where the piston travels. The reduction in bore will lead to the overall capacity of the engine coming down to 350cc, while the engine stroke is expected to remain unchanged. What this means is that the engine character will see a shift, and probably we could get a more refined tuning.
The power output is likely see a slight dip, and we expect a cut of around 2-3 bhp. The new 350cc Triumph engine is expected to produce around 37 bhp and 35 Nm of peak torque. The 6-speed gearbox will continue as it is.
Triumph has confirmed the launch timeline for its upcoming 350cc bikes. The new engine will debut in the month of April 2026, along with the price announcement. The new Triumph Speed 400, or rather the Speed 35,0 will likely be priced around Rs. 2.20 lakh, a 20k reduction from the current sticker cost. The price of the other four motorcycles will also get a similar price reduction.
It will be interesting to see whether Bajaj/Triumph renames these motorcycles with the 350 tag or continues with the current 400. Meanwhile, the current 400cc range will likely be discontinued in the Indian market, however, the company will continue to manufacture the 400cc engine for overseas markets.
