New Volkswagen Transporter Van T7 Unveiled: Interesting Details

In its 7th generation, the Volkswagen Transporter Van has been dubbed T7 and is available with a range of powertrain choices including turbo diesel, plug-in hybrid and pure electric.

Volkswagen has revealed the seventh generation model of its popular Transporter van for the European market. Expected to go on sale early next year, the Transporter T7 is accompanied by the unveiling of the Caravelle people mover. These two new offerings join the existing seventh-gen ID.Buzz and Multivan to complete the T7 range. The new VW Transporter T7 is based on the Ford Transit Custom and comes with better space as well as a wide range of powertrain combinations to choose from.

New Volkswagen Transporter Van T7: Powertrain

Before moving ahead, let’s get the powertrain out of the way which forms a big part of this new generation model. As mentioned earlier, the T7 is offered with a range of turbo diesel, PHEV and BEV options. The turbo diesel range of available in three states of tune i.e. 81 kW, 110 kW and 125 kW. The 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid petrol is tuned to produce 171 kW. The pure-electric Transporter T7 draws power from a 64 kWh battery pack, available in three different tunes i.e. 100 kW, 160 kW and 210 kW.

New Volkswagen T7 Caravelle

The diesel and PHEV configurations come with front-wheel-drive as standard. In addition to this, the 110 kW and 125 kW diesel also get the AWD option. On the other hand, the battery-powered Transporter T7 is only available with a rear-wheel-drive option while the AWD is scheduled for a launch at a later stage.

New Volkswagen Transporter Van T7: Different Body Styles

The VW Transporter T7 is available in multiple body styles which include three transportation layouts i.e. Kombi, Panelvan and Dropside along with a people carrier 9-seater Caravelle. Apart from this, a rugged PanAmericana version of the T7 range is also available which has been designed for off-road expeditions. This off-road-oriented version can be had with the people mover Caravelle as well as panel van body styles.

New Volkswagen Transporter Van T7: Dimensions and Payload

The new-generation T7 is longer than the outgoing T6.1 by 146mm and wider by a good 128mm, paired with an extended load compartment. A 400mm wheelbase extension can be had as an optional extra. The maximum payload capacity of the T7 stands at 1.33 tonnes. The braked towing capacity of the new VW Transporter Van has gone up from 2500kg to 2800kg.
