Mahindra & Mahindra launched the Thar Roxx in the Indian market on August 15 and it comes at a starting price of Rs. 13 lakh (ex-showroom). With this in mind, you may be wondering if it is quite a value-for-money package, however, the case is entirely different regarding fuel efficiency and maintenance. In this article, we will closely examine the mileage and related maintenance of the Thar Roxx.

As per the company, the Thar Roxx diesel will return a claimed mileage of 15.20 kmpl with its 2.2-litre mHawk diesel motor. While the transmission option for which this mileage is applicable hasn’t been specified, you can take this as the maximum figure.
On the other hand, the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine claims a mileage of 12.40 kmpl. Similar to the diesel mileage, the exact gearbox-specific figures haven’t been specified. Again, you can take this as the maximum claimed number and it is likely for the manual gearbox.
As with the case with every other car in the Indian market, the ARAI claimed figures are way too high compared to what you get in the real world. For the Thar Roxx, you can expect a real-world mileage of 7-10 kmpl for the petrol in city use. For highways, 10-12 kmpl is the realistic figure and the rest depends on your driving style.
Similarly, for Thar Roxx diesel, the highway fuel efficiency will be around 14-15 kmpl while in the city, you can expect anywhere between 10-13 kmpl. It will vary depending on your driving style and transmission choice. The AISIN-sourced 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox employed in the Thar Roxx will return a lower mileage as compared to the manual.

Since the Thar Roxx is positioned in the same price bracket as other mid-size SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the like, it is important to have a comparison of the running costs. While these are two different segments, Mahindra has positioned the Thar Roxx as an alternative to the mid-size SUVs.
All the mid-size SUVs come with a claimed mileage of around 18-21 kmpl depending on the powertrain. This is a significant difference and the customers need to understand that their fuel bills will go up significantly if they choose to buy the Thar Roxx. Moreover, the yearly maintenance will also be on the higher side. We will soon bring out a detailed mileage comparison between the Thar Roxx and other mid-size SUVs.
