Hyundai Motor India Limited debuted the new 1.5-litre tGDi petrol engine with the new-gen Verna in the Indian market. This engine replaced the erstwhile 1.4-litre tGDi unit which powered the Creta, Seltos and Carens. For the record, the 1.4-litre turbo engine was a fully imported unit. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine puts 158 bhp and 253 Nm of peak torque in stock form, paired with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT gearbox. In the latest development, this engine has been tuned for the first time in India which was earlier said to be locked by the latest engine management system from Kefico. This first-in-India dyno tested stage 1 tune of the Hyundai/Kia’s 1.5-litre tGDi petrol engine is performed by GT Tunerz, Delhi. Currently, the the 1.5-litre turbo GDI petrol engine powers a slew of cars in the Hyundai and Kia’s line-up including Verna, Seltos, Creta, Creta N-Line Carens and Alcazar. In the stock form, the unit churns out 158 bhp and 253 Nm of peak torque. As per the information provided by GT Tunerz, Delhi, this 1.5 engine is a derivative of the potent 1.6-litre turbo gasoline motor that powers the Hyundai i20 N internationally.
This direct injection motor currently powers multiple cars in the Hyundai/Kia’s global line-up and it gets a 48V mild/hybrid system for the international markets. However, in India, the mild-hybrid system has been given a miss.
The 1.5-litre turbo GDI petrol engine was not tunable until now as it was running the latest engine management systems from Kefico. As per the Delhi-based tuner, a few tuning tools released beta programs for these ECUs and they went ahead with the Verna to check the working. Now let’s just to the numbers:-

Stock Power Tested on Dyno: 148 Bhp & 271 Nm

These bumped-up output figures account for a gain of 32% in power and 29% in torque. The added oomph with the Stage 1 Tune in the Hyundai Verna Turbo will make the sedan even more appealing to enthusiasts. We hope Hyundai soon brings out the N-Line version of the Verna with a stiffer suspension setup and improved steering geometry, making the low-slung even more desirable.
