Force Motors recently launched the updated Gurkha 3-Door and Gurkha 5-Door in the Indian market at a price tag of Rs. 16.75 lakh and Rs. 18 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. Earlier, it was speculated that a 4X2 version of the Force Gurkha could be on the cards and in the latest development, a leaked homologation document has confirmed that Force Gurkha 4X2 will soon be a reality. The Force Gurkha is a slow seller and it boils down to multiple reasons. One of the main factors is the relativity steep sticker cost which seems a bit unjustified when compared to the Mahindra Thar which is the segment king. In addition to this, the limited sales and service network of Force Motors along with the lack of brand value, which is often a big deciding factor when we talk about lifestyle vehicles.
All these aforementioned factors are contributing to the low sales numbers and to deal with this, an affordable 4X2 version could be a good strategy. The theory is backed by the example of Thar RWD which is selling like a hot cake.
As per the details leaked by the homologation document, the Force Gurkha 4X2 will only come with the 3-Door variant and it will draw power from the familiar Mercedes-sourced FM 2.6 litre CR turbo-diesel engine, putting out 140 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. In terms of features, it will remain the same and only miss out on the 4X4 hardware. This means the functional snorkel will look cool on a 4X2 Gurkha.
We expect the Force Gurkha 4X2 to launch in the coming months, most probably in July and August. As for the price is concerned, Rs. 16.75 lakh is the sticker cost of the 4X4 3-Door variant. The exclusion of 4X4 hardware will help to save the cost but it will miss out of the tax benefits which the Thar RWD got with its 1.5-litre diesel engine. So, realistically, we expect a price tag of around Rs. 15 lakh (ex-showroom), however, we are pretty sure that it will not attract many customers at a Rs. 15 lakh price point. On the other hand, anything around Rs. 13 lakh will be the best bet for Force Motors and we suggest the company to do the same, even at the cost of their profit margins.
