2025 BMW M5: What’s Under The Hood?
Powering the 2025 7th-generation BMW M5 is the familiar S68B44T0 series 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, mated to a proper plug-in hybrid setup. The engine in its base tune is capable of producing 577 horses and 553 pound-feet of peak torque with a redline of 7,200 rpm. As we said earlier that the new M5 gets 717 HP and the remaining oomph comes from the BMW M Hybrid system, via a permanent synchronous electric motor present inside the car’s 8-speed automatic gearbox. This electric motor puts out 194 HP and 207 pound-feet of peak torque. Looking at the new M5’s power figures, these are even higher than the outgoing M5 CS.
2025 BMW M5: The Electric Power
The BMW M5 houses a 14.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and in the pure-electric mode, it can run 25 miles with a top speed of 86 mph. The electric motor’s nominal torque is boosted to as much as 332 lb-ft at the transmission input via a pre-gearing stage patented by BMW. On paper, the BMW claims that the new M5 can do the 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.4 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155 mph. With the optional BMW Driver’s package, it can be enhanced to 190 mph.
In addition, the prodigious torque gives the M Hybrid drive system outstanding elasticity, which is reflected in a time of 2.9 seconds for the sprint from 50 to 75 mph in fifth gear. In fourth gear, this figure drops as low as 2.2 seconds.

2025 BMW M5: The Added Weight
While BMW has shied away from mentioning the added weight up front, we shall inform you that the low-slung weighs 5,400 pounds and this is due to the added hybrid system. This is a good 1,100 pounds more than the outgoing model and even heavier than the fully electric BMW i5 M60 xDrive.
2025 BMW M5: The Styling Department
The front view of the new BMW M5 is shaped by a modern take on the signature BMW twin headlights and BMW kidney grille. The standard Adaptive LED Headlights with cornering light function bring a clean, modern look. M Shadowline Lights, also standard, add darkened trim to the inside of the housings. The newly designed BMW M kidney grille is finished in Black high-gloss and almost entirely enclosed.
A single M double-bar bearing the M5 badge runs horizontally across the grille. The grille centre houses the sensors for the driver assistance systems. In its lower section, two small, matte-finished air intakes ensure optimum temperature control by efficiently channelling the incoming air to the radiators. The sides of the body, including the front and rear wheel arches, have been completely redesigned specifically for the M5. This has resulted in an increase in the width by 3 inches at the front wheels and 1.9 inches at the rear when compared to the standard BMW 5 Series. This means no additional flares on the wheel arches are required to accommodate the wider tyres.
